How to make Christmas Pom Poms

Updated: Dec 23, 2021

Christmas traditions haven't changed all that much from the past. However a tradition I recall from my time at primary school is making homemade pom poms for decorations.

They are reasonably easy to make and a lot of fun. You could make a really huge one with your class or just some individual ones.

They can be a bit tricky in places so I would suggest making the templates for students and just getting them to wind the wool (yarn) around them. Then completing the cutting and tying yourself and return the pom pom to the student.

Why not introduce some old fashioned Christmas traditions with these colourful pom poms?

Here is how I made them.

First, download the link to the free template here.

Trim and trace onto the firm card and then cut out.

Then wind some wool (yarn) around the two pieces of card together. Do not wind it too tightly though. Wind it all the way around many times (the more wool the fluffier they will be!).

When you reach the end, cut the wool and tuck it under one of the pieces of wool you have wound on.

Then take very sharp scissors and cut the wool between the pieces of card.

It will feel like it wants to pop open so hold on to it tight! Then place some wool around the middle (between the cards) and pull tight and tie a knot.

Fluff it out and give it a trim with scissors if you want it extra fluffy!

When finished you can string them together to make a garland for the classroom or just let students play some counting games with them.
