Teaching Kindergarten Counting at Easter

There are so many ways to bring some seasonal fun to your math rotations and any sort of counting activity is one of the easiest ways to do this.

You don't have to ditch the curriculum either! The following activities meet the following Curriculum requirements for US Kindergarten and Foundation Year Maths (Australia).

Common Core

K.CC.A.1 Count to 100 by ones and by tens.

THE AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM

Foundation Year Maths:

Establish understanding of the language and processes of counting by naming numbers in sequences, initially to and from 20, moving from any starting point (ACMNA001)

You can use any objects you have around house or the classroom that have an Easter theme. Here I have toy carrots (from Big W Australia) and some counting cards. Children can pull the card out, read the word and then pull out the number of objects to match.

Hide the objects in a bowl full of dried rice, chickpeas or sand. Provide tongs and then see if students can find the items to build finger strength. The bigger the bowl to hide things in the better!

Other great objects to use are Easter eggs. You can use plastic eggs or hard boil some eggs and dye them. These are really tricky to pick up with tongs so you may need a large spoon for children to fish these out of the container.
